For engines that rev above 5400 RPM
1981 to 2015 General Motors vehicles equipped with the 2004R, 700R4/4L60, 4L60E, 4L65E, and 4L70E automatic transmission often have complaints of pressure drop at high RPM, pressure regulator buzz or moaning noise when hot, lower than normal line pressure at idle when hot as well as broken pump rings.
The first issue is that the original equipment pump rings are brittle and will break causing extensive damage to the pump as well as generate severe metal contamination throughout the transmission.
The other issue is with the unintentional oil pressure build up acting on the decrease area of the pump slide at high engine RPM. When the engine is modified to go beyond the MAX RPM range that the transmission was designed for, the increased flow of fluid within the pump builds up on the decrease area of the pump slide and pushes on the slide and overcomes the priming spring tension which reduces the pump volume output. This oil intrusion is an accidental event that occurs even though MAX line pressure has not peaked. The end result is a line pressure drop during MAX throttle upshifts resulting in soft shifts and frictions material failure. The new high-tension priming spring(s) overcome this problem by canceling out the oil intrusion.
The TransGo rings in this kit are not made of brittle cast iron or sintered metal. They are made of tough high carbon heat treated and annealed steel and are slightly larger than the OE rings. Therefore, they will not break and cause expensive damage to the pump like the original equipment rings can do. In addition, the slightly larger and stiffer rings increase the pump efficiency resulting in higher pressure at idle when hot.
